Palm Beach may never have become an incorporated town had not the 75 or so year-around residents panicked at the rumor that West  Palm Beach was considering annexing the infant resort area. A handful of residents gathered to sign the town charter on April 17, 1911, and E.N. "Cap" Dimick, who built the island's first hotel, The Cocoanut  Grove House in 1880, was named the first mayor.

Palm Beach was incorporated in 1911. It is 12 miles long and three-quarters mile wide at its widest point for a total of 3.75 square miles, or 2,076  acres. Water is always nearby, with the Intracoastal Waterway (called Lake Worth at this point) on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.
Palm Beach residents are rich and largely older -- more than half the town's population of 9,800 is over 65.

You know you've come to a different place as soon as you cross the waterway from West Palm Beach or the town limits on A1A. The town, with its extravagant estates and landscaping, has been home to the rich and famous for years. Celebrities such as Donald Trump and Sen. Joseph Kennedy own property in Palm Beach. Simply taking a drive down A1A or Ocean Boulevard can turn into a sightseeing tour your camera won't want to miss.
One of Palm Beach's most famous landmarks is the Breakers Hotel. Built in a mere 11 months and opened on Dec. 29, 1926, the Breakers stretches across 140 acres of land and  is still a sight not to be missed. Another must-see attraction is picturesque Worth Avenue, where some of the world's most prestigious retailers cater to some of the world's richest shoppers.
