World famous Finnish baritone Jorma Hynninen, Professor of Singing at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, was interested to see and hear the video recording of Tony’s debut solo recital in Kravis Center. Based on this professor Hynninen wrote a recommendation for Tony.

JORMA HYNNINEN, baritone
Born: 1941 – Leppävirta, Finland

The baritone Jorma Hynninen has created an exceptionally striking and notable career as a singer of opera, lied and concert music. The foundation for his career has been his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under Matti Tuloisela and Antti Koskinen, and in Rome as a student of Luigi Ricci.

In 1969 Hynninen won the Lappeenranta Song Contest. In the following year he was engaged as a soloist at the Finnish National Opera, and since 1974 he has performed regularly at another important Finnish opera venue, the Savonlinna Opera Festival. During his international career, Hynninen has sung at the New York Metropolitan, the Milan La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Moscow Bolshoi, and in the opera houses of Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, Buenos Aires, Barcelona and Madrid etc. Hynninen has given concerts all over the world, and made numerous recordings of the key opera, lied and concert repertoire, along with the works of Finnish composers.

Hynninen has influenced Finnish musical life in a number of administrative positions. These include Director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival (1991-93), and Artistic Director of the Finnish National Opera (1984-90), the Joensuu Song Festival (1980-91) and the Savonlinna Opera Festival (1993-). In 1990 he was made a Professor of the Arts, and from August 1997 he has been the Professor of Singing at the Sibelius Academy
